GOLDENROD -- A home invasion ended with one of the suspects dead and several others injured early Saturday morning.
Seminole County deputies said two men returned to a home on Fernbrook Way, when witnesses said the two were confronted by armed suspects who forced their way inside and opened fire.
That, deputies said, was when one of the victims grabbed a gun and started shooting back.
When deputies arrived, they found Maurice Thomas collapsed in the street. He was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive.
Three other people were shot, but officials said they were expected to be OK.
A second suspect was found in a nearby wooded area, and faces charges.
Officials said, Mack Brooks, one of the victims found in the home, was also shot during a previous home invasion in Orange County.

From the October 3, 2009 Akron Beacon Journal:
A Chicago man suspected in an attempted armed robbery was shot and killed Thursday night in what Akron police are calling a confrontation with the owner of a neighborhood market at Raymond and Campbell streets.
Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said the store owner, Ali Ahmed, 59, had closed for the night and was walking to his vehicle in the rear parking lot at about 7:30 when the suspect approached.
There was an exchange of gunfire — witnesses reported seven or eight shots — and both men were hit, Edwards said.
Ahmed was taken by ambulance to Akron General Medical Center with wounds that were not life threatening, Edwards said.
A hospital official declined Friday to release any details about Ahmed's condition.
Edwards, the department's spokesman, identified the robbery suspect as Timothy Grant, 29, of Chicago's west side. He said Grant died at 9:04 p.m. Thursday at Akron General from unspecified gunshot wounds.
According to police radio traffic moments after the shooting, one man was shot in the head and the other in the hand.
Grant's mother, Sharon Grant, 50, said in a phone interview from her Chicago residence that her son was visiting an aunt in Barberton — his second trip there in the past year — and that she talked to him by phone about noon Thursday.
She said he asked to be wired some money for a bus ride back home and that she was preparing to do that when hospital officials called and said her son was deceased.

Sheriff: Revenge likely motive for fatal home invasion
A New Jersey man who was shot and killed during a home invasion in Halifax Friday morning was likely seeking revenge for a two decade-old domestic dispute, according to Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier.
The investigation is ongoing into details of the 1988 dispute between Marcel Alston, of Halifax, and Carlton L. Burgess, 61, of Lumberton, N.J. Frazier said.
"It's baffling right now. We've got a lot of loose ends that we've got to try to tie up," said Lt. Bobby Martin, with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said that a knock woke up Alston around 7 a.m. at his house at 5524 U.S. Highway 301, where he lives alone. When Alston opened the door, Burgess, who had a gun, began assaulting Alston.
Alston got away and was climbing up the stairs when Burgess fired, striking his victim in the buttocks, investigators said. Alston managed to get to his bedroom and got out a gun he kept there.
Burgess followed Alston into the bedroom, and Alston fatally shot him in the upper torso, according to investigators.
According to a 911 call, Alston went to a neighbor's for help after the shootings.
In addition to a gunshot wound, Alston suffered a gash on the head. He was undergoing surgery at Halifax Regional Hospital Friday afternoon. His condition was stable, Frazier said.
Alston acknowledged his acquaintance with Burgess and said they hadn't seen each other in several years.
Deputies were examining a white van with New Jersey license plate parked in front of Alston's house that Burgess might have driven. Investigators were also searching a room at the Days Inn in Weldon where Burgess had checked in Wednesday.
Frazier said the killing appeared to be a case of self-defense. The Halifax County District Attorney's Office has to decide whether charges will be filed.
Neighbors said they were stunned this happened to Alston, who has been their friend for years.
"It shocked me," neighbor Leroy Lynch said. "I'm really sad. He's a real nice man."

Duke student shot during struggle with would-be robber
A Duke student struggled with a man who tried to rob him, resulting in gunfire that wounded him and possibly the would-be robber, Durham police said.
The student and a woman were walking in the 500 block of Watts Street shortly before midnight Saturday when a man armed with a gun approached them from behind, police said. He ordered the pair to put their hands on their heads and started to search them.
A struggle ensued over the gun, and two shots were fired, police said. The student was shot in the abdomen, and the attempted robber fled.
"I was pretty sure that it was shots, not firecrackers. ... It was like right here, and the woman, she was screaming her guts out,” said Anita Akella, a Duke graduate student who lives nearby.
The victim, whose identity hasn't been released, was treated at a nearby hospital. The woman was uninjured.
The gunman was limping when he fled and might have been shot, police said. He was described as black, approximately 40 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a stocky build. He has bulging eyes. He wore a gray shirt and dark jeans.
The shooting happened one block from Duke's East Campus, where first-year students are to move in next week.
Graduate student Melanie Oberman said the shooting happened outside the apartment she recently rented.
"I definitely don't feel comfortable living in the house until I have security put in," she said. "I had no idea that something could happen right outside my door like that."
Residents said Trinity Park neighborhood has long been a safe area.
“It makes me very sad, more than it does fearful," homeowner Sally Spears said. "But the world we live in now has turned into the situation that it is."
Anyone with any information about the shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

Woman, intruder shot during home invasion attempt
An attempted home invasion late Tuesday in North Las Vegas resulted in an exchange of gunfire and a woman and an intruder being shot.
Police said someone tried to enter a home shortly before midnight in the 4100 block of Karma Drive, between West Craig and Alexander roads, when the homeowner opened fire. The intruder fired back and injured the woman, authorities said.
Officers were dispatched to the home at 11:52 p.m. and upon arrival found a 31-year-old North Las Vegas resident with gunshot wounds to her leg. The injured woman said she had exchanged gunfire with unidentified men who had entered her home and threatened to shoot her 14-year-old son.
The boy wasn’t injured.
Police found a blood trail that left the residence and ended in the street in front of the house.
Sgt. Tim Bedwell of the North Las Vegas Police Department said he isn't sure who fired first.
He said the woman suffered a minor non-life threatening gunshot wound and was transported to University Medical Center. At the hospital, officers were notified a male gunshot victim had recently arrived to be treated who matched the description of one of the suspects.
His injuries are described as serious but non-life threatening.
Authorities said they do not know if the woman knew the intruder. Bedwell said an arrest hasn’t been made in the case.

Attempted robbery at North Long Beach pawn shop ends with robber, employee shot
Three would-be robbers stormed a North Long Beach pawn shop Tuesday morning armed with one gun and a lot of bravado.
When the suspects fled Long Beach Pawn & Jewelry, however, all they had to show for their efforts was a bullet from the shop supervisor's gun lodged in one suspect's leg, witnesses said.
The 64-year-old supervisor from Long Beach was also shot, and hit in the face, but is expected to survive, authorities said.
Police at the scene said the suspects clearly picked the wrong target, which is at 5106 Long Beach Blvd.
"I mean, who's stupid enough to try and rob a pawn shop?," said one witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "They have tons of security, it's covered in cameras, who doesn't know that?"
The witness told the Press-Telegram that he was walking into the pawn shop to pay his bill when the armed suspect walked in right before him. He recalled the gunman vividly due to his custom-looking, three-piece white suit, which looked like it belonged in church more than a pawn shop.
"(The shop's employees) even complimented him on his dress," the witness recalled, saying the suspect asked a female employee to show him some rings because he was shopping for his girlfriend.
After she took the armed man to the back of the shop, the other two suspects - dressed in casual clothes - rushed in, the witness said.
One man jumped the counter and the other stayed by the front door as the armed suspect ordered everyone on the floor. That prompted the shop's supervisor - who the witness knew only as Bob - to confront the trio, the witness said.
As the other employees ran to the back of the store and customers hit the ground, the shop's supervisor and the gunman faced off and both opened fire, the witness said.
The supervisor was shot in the cheek and fell back while one of the suspects was hit in the leg, the witness said.
"After the first shots I heard three more shots, and then (the suspects) crawled out of there," the witness said.
"They got nothing...but one of them left his gun behind," he added.
Long Beach police were called to the business at about 10:30 a.m. and confirmed an employee was shot but did not release any information about the shootout or the extent of the victim's injuries.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics treated the victim at the scene and took him to a hospital. He was listed in mild distress and stable condition, said Capt. Jackawa Jackson.
The witness said that a river of blood gushed from the victim's cheek wound, prompting the witness to take off his shirt and use it to apply pressure to the wound while he talked to a 911 operator.
"He was saying 'I can't feel my arms, I can't feel my legs, I'm going to pass out, I'm going to die!" the witness recalled. "He was (going into shock) but we were able to keep him with us."
After the shooting, several people were seen inside the pawn shop talking with police. Shattered glass was scattered everywhere from the gunshots.
Detectives were checking security camera footage at the shop and other businesses in the area to help identify the suspects, said officers at the scene.
A search area was set up immediately after the botched robbery, but as of 5 p.m. the suspects were still at large, said Officer Jackie Bezart, an LBPD spokeswoman.
The three suspects were described as black males in their 20s, Bezart said.
Witnesses said the two suspects who were not armed were wearing sweat shirts with hoods and said the supervisor who was shot was an older man known to wear his gun in a holster while working in the shop.
They also said there were several more guns behind the counter, but that none of the other employees could get to the weapons because one suspect had jumped the counter and blocked their access.
"I hate to think what would have happened if Bob didn't have his gun," the witness said. "It probably would have turned into a take-over."

Man who assisted wounded store owner says he knows the suspect in Leonard Short Stop robbery
When Amos Bell spotted the owner of the Leonard Short Stop chasing a masked gunman Tuesday morning, he didn't hesitate to help.
He got out of the car he was riding in, and gave chase.
"(The owner) was running up the street with a gun," said Bell, 18. "I knew it wasn't going to be nothing good."
Bell and the owner, who had been shot in the leg in the 10:40 a.m. holdup, lost sight of the robber, but police caught the suspect a half-hour later hiding in some bushes. Police brought Bell and the hobbled owner, whose name wasn't released, to the scene of the capture to identify the robber.
Once there, it got a little more complicated for Bell: Not only was he a friend to the store owner, stopping to chat every day, but he knew the alleged robber, too.
"It was one of my buddies, that's the bad thing about it," Bell said. "A guy I'm cool with."
Still, he said, he could not defend the robbery, particularly hitting the store, at 1038 Leonard St. NW, that serves the neighborhood and seems to sell virtually everything.
"He's a nice guy," Bell said of the store's owner. "This is the corner store. He's just trying to help us out."
Police caught up to the suspect just after 11 a.m., and found a handgun, too. Officers were responding to a call that a store owner, armed with a long gun, was chasing a man who had just shot him.
The owner told Bell that he was shot in the leg when he refused the robber's demand for cash. Police recovered the $800 reported stolen.
The owner returned to his store after Tuesday's shooting, walking with a limp and the sides of his denims slit for examination by paramedics. Awaiting ambulances soon left after the man said he didn't need to go to the hospital, Bell said.
The store remained closed after Tuesday's shooting.

Gun shop employee shoots robbery suspect
Five suspects were in custody after a shooting incident Wednesday afternoon at Schrank's Smoke 'N Gun where police said robbery was the apparent motive.
One male suspect was flown to a hospital after suffering three gunshot wounds. An employee of the gun shop was treated at an area hospital.
According to witness accounts, a subject went behind the counter at the store at 2010 Washington St., and was engaged with a store clerk in a verbal altercation that turned physical, Waukegan Police Cmdr. Wayne Walles said.
At one point, the store clerk produced a pistol and fired at the subject, striking him in the chest twice and once in the leg.
The injured male suspect was flown by Flight For Life to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he was in surgery late Wednesday.
The store clerk inadvertently shot himself in the hand during the struggle, police said.
Two men outside the store were taken into custody immediately after the shooting. Police Chief William Biang said they were detained because they had been inside the store with the other suspect at some point.
Police later said a total of four people, besides the male who was shot, were taken into custody in connection with the incident.
"Four other subjects who were at the scene at the time of this incident have been located and are being interviewed by police," said Walles. No identities in the case were released.
Two men who didn't want to be identified at the scene at 1:45 p.m. said they had an appointment to sell or trade some guns, but couldn't because of the police and emergency vehicle at the store.
"If we had come 15 minutes earlier, we would have been in there," one said. They were both amazed anyone would try anything in the store because employees openly carry weapons, and the manager of the store is a marksman who teaches shooting classes.
Washington Street was shut down for about an hour and nearby Waukegan High School was put on lock down.
Police told the school to put "Code White" into effect, which means everyone must stay put, said Biang, but the school issued a "Code Red" instead, used when a gunman is inside the school.
The shooting is the second by a store employee in Waukegan in less than six months. A store clerk fatally shot a 20-year-old robber who tried to flee the scene of a grocery store on Lincoln Avenue in October after the North Chicago man entered the store carrying a gun and demanding money.
In January, the clerk was cleared of any wrongdoing by a Lake County grand jury which ruled the shooting was in self defense.

In Atlanta, police said a woman fatally stabbed a home-invasion robbery suspect who broke into her apartment while her 11-year-old child slept.
No charges have been filed in either case.
Cobb police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said Richard Ellis, 38, of Cauthen Court in Marietta was getting out of his car in his garage late Saturday night when he was approached by a man with a handgun. The man demanded money from Ellis and shot him in the leg, police said. Pierce said the incident was not a random crime and that the two men had “previous contact” in the past.
“Within moments of being shot and while the male is briefly distracted, Ellis grabbed the gun and a fight ensued in the driveway of the residence over control of it,” Pierce said. “Detectives believe that Ellis was eventually able to wrestle the weapon away from the male before shooting him twice with it.”
The wounded man, identified as John Harrison, 33, of Palmetto, ran to the front porch of a nearby house and collapsed, Pierce said. Harrison was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but died of his injuries. Ellis was treated at the hospital for his wound and released.

Police said two men walked into Christopher Diamonds at Chandler Boulevard and Coronado just before 7 p.m.
One had a gun and apparently tried to rob the place.
Police said Christopher Diamonds is a family run business and only three people were in the store at the time, including the owner, his wife and his son.
Another employee was outside the business.
Police said the owner, Rusty Uptain, grabbed a gun to defend his family and store.
A gun battle ensued and both Uptain and one of the suspects, 46-year-old Kevin William Murray, was shot.
Police said Uptain was shot in the face, but is expected to be okay.
Murray reportedly jumped into a stolen pick-up truck and fled the scene.
A police officer spotted the truck and chased him to the 101 and Broadway in Tempe.
That's where they said Murray died.
At about 8:15 p.m., a police dog tracked the scent of the second robber, 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Simpson Jr.
Officers peeled out of the parking lot and caught Simpson a few blocks away near a wash.
Police said the suspects did not steal anything.
Family spokesperson Nancy Uptain told ABC 15, "My brother-in-law is an incredible marksman he's a hunter and we're very gratefully for our gun rights because with him being able to have his own protection he was able to save his family."

Alcide Doucet, 60, shortly after 1:50 a.m. Sunday allegedly went to the Kelley Drive home of a 43-year-old woman and kicked in the door, according to a police report. Doucet allegedly hit the woman in the head with his fists and a handgun.
A 42-year-old neighbor heard screaming and other noise coming from the woman's house and went to help, according to the report. The neighbor, who police did not identify, apparently knew of the problems between the woman and Doucet, according to the report.
Once inside the woman's home, the neighbor saw Doucet holding the woman by her hair and raising his hand with the gun in it, according to the report. The neighbor told Doucet several times to stop. Doucet allegedly turned the gun on the neighbor and fired once, hitting the man.
The neighbor returned fire with his own gun, hitting Doucet several times in the upper body.
The woman and neighbor were treated for non-life threatening wounds and Doucet was taken to an area hospital and underwent surgery for his wounds.
Doucet likely will face at least felony domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon once released from the hospital. The neighbor will not face charges since he was defending the woman, according to police.

Suspect killed in Inver Grove Heights liquor store robbery
Fearing he would be shot if he let the liquor store robber tie him up, Matt Huerta made a grab for the gun.
As the two men struggled for control of the weapon at Trail Liquors in Inver Grove Heights Thursday morning, it fired several times. The suspect was hit in the chest and died several hours later. Huerta was able to call 911 for help and is recovering at a St. Paul hospital.
Minutes before the scuffle, the suspect had walked into the store and demanded money from the cash register.
The suspect then walked Huerta, the store manager, to a back room and demanded he open the safe.
Huerta, the only employee in the store at about 10:30 a.m., told the man he didn't know the combination.
"The robber wanted to tie Matt up, and Matt thought if he was tied up, he could be shot,'' said Kathleen Schneider, the store's co-owner. When the man put the gun in the top of his pants, Huerta went to grab it, she said. That's when the scuffle began. The gun apparently discharged several times, she said.
Shots hit the suspect in the chest and the manager in the leg, according to investigators.
The manager then called 911 to report an armed robbery, said Lt. Jerry Salmey, a spokesman for the Inver Grove Heights police.
Huerta, 57, of Rosemount, was listed in good condition at Regions Hospital in St. Paul on Thursday. He declined requests for interviews.
The suspect's name won't be released until family members are notified, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office said Thursday night.
Huerta is in "disbelief" over what happened, Schneider said. "He said it probably all happened in 15 minutes, but it felt like 15 hours."
"You just never think something like this is going to happen,'' Schneider said. "It's so tragic to think that someone would try to do this for a couple hundred dollars."

North Miami, Florida
From the March 31, 2008 Miami Herald:
A shooting outside a North Miami-Dade shopping plaza Sunday morning left a security guard wounded, a man dead and another on the run, Miami-Dade police said.
The wild scene played out at around 9 a.m. as early-morning shoppers began arriving at the center anchored by a Winn-Dixie supermarket at Northwest Seventh Avenue and 111th Street.
It's unclear yet what sparked the incident, but it may have been a confrontation between two young men and the guard, and not an attempted robbery.
''There are a lot of customers who did see what happened and we are interviewing them as well,'' said Robert Williams, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department.
An aunt of the dead man said the victim was 19 years old, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS4. She said she did not believe her nephew was involved in a crime.
''I don't know what happened in the parking lot, what went on,'' said Antoinette Cobb, who told the station she was the dead man's aunt. ``I want to know what happened. . . . The police are not giving me any information.''
Witnesses said the security guard appeared to be making his rounds at the center in a golf cart when he was approached by the men.
There was a confrontation that escalated. Investigators said one of the men pulled a gun and shot the guard in the upper chest. The guard returned fire, hitting one of the men, who fell in the parking lot.
The second man took off into a neighborhood just northeast of the shopping center.
The security guard along with the other man were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Hospital, Williams said. The wounded man was declared dead at the hospital. His name has not been released.
SHOT IN TORSO
The security guard, who was shot in the upper torso, was undergoing surgery. He also had not been identified Sunday night.
''Right now we do not have a motive,'' Williams said, adding that homicide investigators are still conducting interviews.
Detectives need to talk to the hospitalized security guard for a clear picture of what sparked the violence.
''We do not know yet if robbery was the motive. We want to make absolutely sure that that was the motive for this so we need to talk to that security guard to get a statement from him,'' Williams said.

Several shots were fired and both men were wounded, Odom said.
The suspect was taken to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center while the intended victim was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was in surgery. The names of both men were withheld.
Residents living on street where the store is were shaken by the shooting.

A 16-year-old was arrested late Sunday night in connection with an attempted Gastonia convenience store robbery that left two clerks seriously injured.
Police say a suspect apparently engaged in a shootout with a clerk during the Saturday night incident.
Gastonia police said Brandon Carson of Gastonia has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
A couple working together at the Gastonia store are hospitalized in Charlotte. Luke Williams, 45, and girlfriend Vickie Madsen, who is in her early 50s, were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center late Saturday with multiple gunshot wounds, Gastonia police said. Williams is listed in critical condition this morning. Madsen is in serious condition.
The robbery occurred about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, when an armed man walked into Ken's Superette at 1528 W. May Ave. and demanded money. A gunfight ensued, police said, preventing the robber from getting anything of value.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, police said.

Bridge City police looking for burglar, homeowner recovering from self-inflicted wound
Bridge City police continued their search Thursday for a man who reportedly tried to burglarize a home with the homeowner still inside.
Meanwhile, the homeowner is recuperating from surgery after accidentally shooting himself in the foot; an injury he received while trying to keep the burglar from entering the home.

Robed man chases robbers with rifle
A resident of Campus Lodge wearing a bathrobe and armed with a rifle chased three would-be robbers from his apartment Sunday afternoon.
The man, whose name was not released by deputies, was shot in the neck by one of the robbery suspects before a deputy patrolling the area spotted him running in a parking lot, said J.D. Calloway, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Witnesses said he fired a round into the air, Calloway said.
The three men, one carrying a handgun, allegedly barged into the victim's apartment, located at 2608 Rusty Ridge Loop, around 3:41 p.m., but were chased out by the victim.
Frank Prather, a resident of Campus Lodge, said he was drawn outside his apartment by the sound of people arguing. He thought it came from the floor under his.
He heard a man pleading not to be shot before a gun was fired. Prather said he ducked into his house to grab his phone, and when he went outside a second time, he heard another shot.
The victim was shot from behind in the base of the neck outside his apartment, Calloway said. His injuries were not life threatening, but the victim was taken to Tampa General Hospital for examination.
The suspects, who drove a red Chevy Impala, got lost in the complex, and a deputy blocked their escape through the entrance, Calloway said. They then abandoned their vehicle and fled into the surrounding area.
The Sheriff's office sent deputies, K-9 units and helicopters to search the area around Campus Lodge. No arrests have been made.

Man Fights Off Home Invaders
An Eastview Drive man fought off three home invaders and traded shots with one of them on Tuesday night.
Police said 30-year-old Courtney Brown was treated for several injuries, including a shot to the calf.
Around 9:30 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to a home invasion call with shots fired at 311 Eastview Dr.
Upon arrival, officers talked with the victim, who said he was returning home and was backing his vehicle into the garage when three black males came out of the closet and attempted to rob him.
Mr. Brown said he fought the three suspects and yelled for his daughter to call the police. One of the suspects got into the house and went upstairs to where the daughter had locked herself in the bedroom. The suspect then kicked the door in and demanded she lie on the bed and she would not be hurt. He then took her cell phone.
Mr. Brown continued to fight with the other two suspects and was able to get away from them. He managed to lock the door behind him.
Mr. Brown then encountered the suspect who was inside the house and they fought in the hallway. Mr. Brown broke free, retrieved a handgun from his bedroom and started back to the front door area. The man who was still inside then fired a shot at Mr. Brown, striking him in the calf. Mr. Brown returned fire but did not hit the suspect.
All three of the suspects fled on foot.
Mr. Brown was taken to Erlanger where he was treated for several cuts to his head and face and the gunshot wound to his calf. He was treated and released.
Chattanooga Police are looking for suspect #1 who is tall and thin wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. Suspects 2 and 3 were medium build with scarves over their faces and knit caps on their heads.
All three of the suspects were armed with chrome handguns.

Gas station clerk pulled gun before he was shot
A gas station clerk wounded in a holdup Friday night was shot after pulling a gun on the robbery suspect, police now say.
Grand Rapids police said the clerk, Eugene Earl-Evonta Eursher, 27, complied with the gunman's demand for money from the register but then pulled a handgun on the thin, bearded robber, who shot and critically wounded Eursher.
Police first said there was only a confrontation between the alleged robber and the clerk.
Police said they believe the suspect is the same man who robbed two other businesses, taking time to say "I'm sorry" during one heist.
Eursher's parents said Sunday that they are not interested in the apologies of whoever pulled the trigger -- they just want that person off the street.
Eursher is recovering at a local hospital from the gunshot wound he received at the Boston Square Shell station, which is owned by his father, Edward Earl Eursher.

Man Kicked Out Of Home, Returns With Gun, Is Shot Dead
A young man was wounded by gunfire while he shot and killed an intruder at a home in Pittsburgh's Homewood area Tuesday morning, according to homicide detectives.
Police officers patrolling the neighborhood said they heard gunshots near the home in the 1500 block of North Murtland Street around 2:40 a.m. (See Map)
They found one man on nearby Lincoln Avenue with a chest wound and a gun in his possession, police said. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in critical condition but later died.
Police identified that man as Ronnell Pittman, 34. No address for Pittman was given.
Pittman had entered the home without being invited and was told to leave, then came back with a gun and started shooting at James Hill, 19, police said.
Hill fired a gun and shot Pittman, who was able to run away but eventually died from his injuries, police said.
Police did not say why Pittman entered the home in the first place. They said he may have gone there by mistake.
Hill, of the Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood, was treated at UPMC Presbyterian for a gunshot wound to the foot.
His uncle said Hill fired the gun to protect his family.
Hill is being held at the Allegheny County Jail on an alleged firearms violation but is not facing any charges for Pittman's death, police said.
Homicide detectives are still investigating. The District Attorney's Office is also involved in the case.

Man shot in face during SLC jewelry store robbery
Salt Lake City police are investigating a robbery that left a man with three gunshot wounds, including one to the face.
The unidentified victim was transported at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday to LDS Hospital in serious condition with two gunshot wounds to the side and one to the face, said Lt. Rich Brede.
Police throughout the Salt Lake Valley were on the lookout for a gray passenger car that fled the shooting at The Mouthpiece Company, located at 40 E. 1300 South. The suspected shooter is described as a black man, about 6 feet 2 inches tall, with red and white shoes.
Police were dispatched to a robbery that escalated into a shooting at the business. Authorities believe the suspect entered the store and got into an altercation with the victim. Both men eventually pulled guns and "several" gunshots were fired, Brede said.
"There are four holes in the wall within the store," Brede said.
Police believe the suspect also may have been wounded in the exchange. Investigators recovered a handgun and several spent bullet casings, Brede said.
The business's motto, etched in lettering on a window, advises customers to "Give them something to talk about." The store specializes in watches, chains, pendants, bracelets, rings and custom grills - jewelry worn over one's teeth.

Officers from the 4th Division were called to an apartment in the 700 block of South Clay Street just before 1 a.m. on the report of a robbery and shooting, said Alicia Smiley, spokeswoman for Louisville Metro Police.
The two people who live in the apartment, Jonathon Postell, 29, and Chiquita Cooper, 23, told police that they both shot at a man who broke in and tried to rob them, Smiley said. The intruder fired back, striking Postell in the ankle and the buttocks, she said.

Convenience Store Owner Fires Back at Armed RobbersFrom Atlanta‘s 11Alive.com of August 23, 2007
A frightening night for customers and the store owner at a convenience store in Griffin.
The robbery happened at Tony's One Stop just before midnight Wednesday on U.S. 41.
A customer, Chris Albright, says he had taken a short cut through the woods to the store where he says two robbers, wearing orange ski masks, jumped him and told him to get on the ground and put a gun to his head. He says they also told him to stand against a wall.
Spalding County deputies say the two later confronted customers behind the store and robbed them.
Deputies say the robbers shot the store owner in the face; he fired back, wounding at least one of the suspects.
Officers later arrested two 17-year-old suspects when they showed up for treatment at a hospital in Clayton County. They also arrested a 17-year-old girl from Henry County who they believe was driving the getaway car, which they also recovered.
The store owner remains in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Wounded Store Owner to be Released
The Spalding County convenience store owner who was shot and wounded in a shootout with some teen robbers late Wednesday night was scheduled for release from Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital Thursday afternoon, according to his father.
"It's a miracle that saved his life," Parish Harvil's father, Ron Harvil, told 11Alive News. Harvil said that as one of the gunmen shot at Parish, Parish instinctively raised his hand in front of his face.
"That deflected the bullet and caused it to tumble" and lose velocity, Harvil said. It embedded in Parish Harvil's skin, in his head, and did not cause a serious wound.
"It took the tip of his middle finger off" on his left hand, Ron said. He said doctors have reattached it.
Parish Harvil was still able to wound one of the robbers in his hand, and that's what led police to arrest the three suspects who are now in custody. Now, Sheriff James Stewart said one of the suspects is cooperating with investigators. Stewart has scheduled an afternoon news conference to update the public on the on-going investigation.

An employee of an Arden-area market was shot in the leg Thursday morning while chasing three men who had just robbed his store at gunpoint, the Sheriff's Department reported.
The three suspects -- last seen in dark clothing and black knit masks -- escaped with cash, and they remained at large in the early afternoon, said Sgt. Tim Curran, sheriff's spokesman.
The status of the wounded employee was not immediately known, but Curran said he was expected to survive. He was described as a 39-year-old relative of the family that owns Toledo's Mexican Market in the 1300 block of Fulton Avenue.
No one answered the phone at the store on Thursday afternoon.
Shortly before 8:30 a.m. the store was robbed, but the crime was not reported to authorities, Curran said. In fact, deputies were first alerted to trouble minutes later when residents at a nearby apartment complex on Wittkop Way reported hearing gunshots.
Curran said a gun battle had ensued at the complex between the robbers and at least two store employees, who had armed themselves with a shotgun and a handgun.
Curran said he did not know if the two groups were wildly shooting through the area or if the exchange took place as the robbers were getting into a car, but it was during that time when the store employee was shot.
Robbery And Shootout At Local Store
Witnesses say it was something out of the Wild West, after a gun battle erupted in a Sacramento apartment complex.
"Six or seven shots and then it was followed by a very, very, loud bang," said Kurt Richter who lives at the Bella Vita Apartments. Sheriff's deputies scoured the complex, trying to piece together an incident that had tenants ducking for cover.
"I'm not going to take a stray bullet in the face," said Richter.
It all started next door, where three armed robbers entered Toledo's Mexican Market on Fulton Avenue.
"It was a take over robbery they held them at gunpoint while they forced one of the employees to get the money," said Sgt. Tim Curran of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department. The three robbers ran out of the back of the store, and crawled through a hole in a fence leading to the apartment complex where a get away car was waiting.
What they didn't know, the store owner and an employee were hot on their heels. The owner had a handgun and a shotgun. A running gun-battle with the suspects took place around the apartments. Shell casings marked the gunmen's path. They got away in a silver four door sedan, but not before leaving some of their loot behind.
Store owner Jaime Toledo showed detectives how the suspects shot at him. The worker who was with him was hit by a bullet. "He was shot through the leg. He's ok, he's at the hospital already," said Toledo.
Toledo been at this location for seven years, but it's the first time he's been robbed. He says he wasn't scared, but then again he admits there wasn't time to think. "I don't know, when that thing happened, nobody was thinking," said Toledo.
Cops prefer victims to be good witnesses, and not take matters into their own hands. But Jaime doesn't regret his actions.

Shooting victim tried to defend himself, detective says
Before being killed, Mark Fisher managed to fire a single shot at the man who had just blasted into his Casper home, a police detective testified today.
Police found a shotgun with one spent cartridge on Foster's body when they discovered him in his North Kenwood Street home on April 1. He had been fatally shot in the chest and head.
The man accused of killing him, 42-year-old Casper resident Edward Taylor, should be tried for first-degree murder in connection with Fisher's death, a judge ruled at the conclusion of Taylor's preliminary hearing in Natrona County Circuit Court today.
Fisher fired at Taylor in self defense, Casper police detective Kathryn Davison testified at the hearing. Officers found that the locked doors to Fisher's home had been blasted open.
Shortly before the killing, Taylor confronted his wife after seeing her leave Fisher's home, Davison said. Edward and Beth Taylor had been in the process of getting a divorce.

Police assurances on his gear are music to DJ's ears
BRIAN LEWIS was leaving his apartment, heading to a gig as a disc jockey in January 2005, when three guys jumped him.
Two of them pulled pistols.
The men wanted his gear, including two CD mixers worth $499 each.
They also wanted Lewis to turn around and go back inside his house with them.
What the robbers didn't know was that Lewis had a gun, and a permit to carry it.
Lewis reached for his gun, telling the robbers he was pulling out the key to his door.
Lewis aimed across his body, drawing a bead on the head of one man aiming a pistol at his back.
Click.
The gun was loaded, but there was no bullet in the chamber.
The two robbers heard the pistol's dry fire and blasted away, shooting Lewis in the back.
"I was able to stand my ground and get a round in there," Lewis said.
"I turned around, started yelling and shooting back. I shot every bullet I had in my clip. I just kept pulling the trigger."
Lewis hit two of the three men, killing one of them. Lewis slumped to the ground and briefly passed out.
He woke up worried about the two robbers still alive.
"I was scared to death," he said. "I was shot. I wasn't going to wait until they finished me off. I got the hell out of there."
Lewis drove, beeping his horn and screaming for help, several blocks to a friend's house, where police and an ambulance came to take him to the hospital.
More than a year later, Lewis knows he is lucky to be alive, and recovered from his injuries.
Police, meanwhile, quickly ruled that he'd been justified in defending himself.
Still, his close call has left one lingering mystery:
What happened to his disc jockey equipment?
"I've been stumped," he said. "I've called everybody. I called the Homicide detectives. I called the district attorney's office."
Then he called the Daily News.
It took some digging, perhaps because there were three police reports filed for the incident in front of Lewis' home in the Ivy Hill neighborhood.
The first officers to arrive there found a dead robber and the disc jockey equipment.
The wounded robber was found somewhere else.
And Lewis was found at his friend's house - three locations, three reports.
So the Police Department and the D.A.'s office rooted through their files last week to trace the mystery of the missing disc jockey equipment.
Lewis also wondered about the fate of his gun, a .40-caliber Taurus that he dropped in front of his house after firing all 11 of its bullets at the three robbers.
"If I'm not going to get my gun back, I'd like to get it out of my name," Lewis explained.
It was unclear last week if the two robbers who survived the shootout with Lewis ever faced criminal charges.
The D.A.'s office has no record of the case being sent its way.
Capt. Ben Naish of the Police Department's Public Affairs Unit did some research and determined that the disc jockey equipment was confiscated as evidence, in part because it was covered with blood in the robbery.
"We'll be able to get him his stuff back," Naish said last week, predicting that Lewis would be reunited with his equipment this week.
"We're working on getting him the proper receipts out of storage right now so that he'll be able to claim them. It shouldn't be a problem."
As for Lewis' gun, Naish explained that "Guns used in a homicide, justified or not, stay in the custody of police."
Lewis could file a petition in court for the gun but it doesn't sound like he wants it back.
Naish said Lewis shouldn't worry about the gun still being registered in his name.
"It's not something that he'd have to worry about being out on the street," Naish said.
Lewis was thrilled to hear his equipment might be returned.
"That's beautiful," he said last week.
"That's great news." *

Resident, Suspect Open Fire During Apparent Home Invasion
Two men are in the hospital Tuesday morning after a shooting at an east side apartment.
According to police, three men tried to kick-in a door at an apartment on Little Bend Circle, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.
One man inside the home apparently had a gun and opened fire at the robbery suspects, striking one of them. Then, police said, one of the robbery suspects fired back, hitting one of the residents.
Although the investigation is ongoing, detectives weren't ruling out the possibility that the two groups of men knew each other.
"Don't know for sure at this point – I'd say they probably do know each other," said Columbus police Det. Art Hughes. "Everything's still under investigation. We have other detectives down at the station questioning everybody."
According to Hughes, the resident who was shot was in critical condition, and the suspect who was wounded is in stable condition. He said both men would be interviewed when their conditions improve.
Police said the other robbery suspects were apprehended at a nearby Meijer store following the shooting.

A home invasion turned into a triple shooting that left one person dead in Harrisburg overnight, according to Mayor Stephen Reed's office.
Two armed men broke into an apartment house on the 1900 block of State Street around midnight and demanded drugs or money, according to officials. A fight broke out and gunshots were fired.
One of the intruders, Jason Haywood, 19, of Susquehanna Township, was killed, according to Reed's office. Another intruder, William Kelly, of the 1800 block of Briggs Street, was shot in the abdomen and is in critical condition, according to the mayor's office. The resident of the home, who is 23, was hit in the shoulder.
The Mayor said police have determined that Haywood and Kelly either shot each other during the struggle with the 23-year old male resident, or that errant gunfire during the struggle struck the pair.
The mayor's office said earlier reports that there was a third gunman, who got away in a white Neon, turned out to be false.
Police have recovered the weapons. Reed said that no charges are likely to be filed against the male resident who fought off his attackers as it is considered justifiable self-defense.

2 Dead, 1 Hurt In Shooting Near Packwood
Gunfire that killed two people and injured one exploded near this Lewis County community Wednesday, when a homeowner found a visitor from Las Vegas breaking into his gun safe, the sheriff's office reported.
The homeowner said a male friend from nearby Morton arrived in the morning for a visit, along with two women and a man from Las Vegas, Nev., whom the homeowner did not know, said sheriff's Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Doench.
The homeowner told investigators he became suspicious he was being distracted by three of his guests, Doench said. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, he directed the visitors to another part of the house.
There, he said he found one of the women had broken into his gun safe and was removing weapons, Doench said. She then shot the homeowner once in the ear with a rifle, giving him a superficial head wound.
The homeowner returned fire, killing the woman.
The visitor from Morton received several gunshot wounds to his legs, possibly from stray bullets, Doench said. He was taken to Morton General Hospital, where he died as he was being prepared for airlift to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The names of the dead and the homeowner were not immediately released.
Natalie Brooks, 44, and her husband, Jason Brooks, 38, of Las Vegas, were booked into the Lewis County Jail for investigation of residential burglary.

Jackson, Mississippi
Armed self-defense doesn't always work as hoped. Perhaps it would have been worse if he hadn't gone for the rifle. From the December 10, 2006 Jackson Clarion-Ledger:
Curtis Addison's Gallatin Street auto body shop was burglarized. To protect it, he began to sleep there. He kept a gun in his pocket.
And now here he was on a warm summertime night, slouched and asleep in a dirty flower-print chair.
Just before midnight, a young man, tall and slim with a scarf hiding his mouth, waved a pistol in Addison's face and ordered him to remove his pants.
Addison awoke. He hesitated. He could not reach his gun. Not like this.
"Please don't shoot me, man," he begged. "I ain't done nothing. I got a daughter I'm trying to live for."
Before long, Addison went against what the experts say to do. He believed he had no choice. He stopped cooperating, and he attacked.
The gunman fired. Five shots landed. Addison bled from his leg, his arm, his hip, his chest and his belly.
But Addison was lucky. His story does not end there. Weeks later, he would be back at work, his accused attacker locked up in jail.
...
He kept a rifle under the counter, a two-shot Derringer pistol in his pants pocket. Besides that, he is a big man, a former football player with the kind of body that could easily hurt a smaller man.
So there he was two days after the scooter theft, July 6, in his shop. He fell asleep in that flower-print chair watching the news, his head cocked to the left. He remembers that clearly because that's how he was when the gunman woke him.
"Get up. Get up!" the man yelled. "Take off your pants!"
Addison knew the man wanted his pants because his wallet and keys were in there. No big deal, really, because he kept his cash in his shirt pocket.
But still, Addison did not like the look in the young man's eyes, droopy, mysterious eyes that held no shame. He believed the scarf-faced man meant to kill him.
Slowly, carefully, Addison removed his pants, the skinny young man still yelling.
The robber snatched the pants away.
The Derringer in the pocket skittered across the tile floor.
Addison attacked.
He shoved the gunman but was too far away to tackle him or to go for the big gun he held.
Bang!
A bullet ripped through a pane of glass.
Bang!
Another one tore through Addison's right leg.
The gunman took off.
Addison darted to the office, slumped into a chair, and reached for the phone.
The gunman returned.
Bang! He shot Addison again. Bang! Again.
Addison ran into the snack room and barricaded the door. There was no phone in that room.
His rifle remained under the counter, his tiny pistol in the hall, useless and sitting on the tile.
Addison bled from his leg, his hip, his arm.
He waited.
Silence.
He left the snack room and went to the office phone. He was sitting there when the gunman returned.
He shot Addison twice more. The chest. The belly.
Addison ran to the front counter. He grabbed the rifle, left the pistol.
He stormed into the office with hate in his heart, but the robber was gone.
...
He returned to work in August, and said he feels great. The robber did not get the $400 in his shirt pocket, and Addison has changed the locks on his home and his business.
The police seized his pistol and rifle to run background checks. He said he purchased both legally.
The man accused of shooting him, 23-year-old Rodney Mendenhall, is jailed with no bond on an aggravated assault charge. A trial date has not been set.
Since reopening his shop, Addison bought a new pistol, which he keeps in his pocket.

Man faces charges in home invasion shootout
A Champion man faces criminal charges after allegedly entering a house and shooting the homeowner in the foot, then fleeing with gunshot wounds after the homeowner returned fire.
Jarod Joseph Jones, 29, of 119 Dellgross Lane, is charged by state police at Greensburg with aggravated assault, criminal attempt at criminal homicide, simple assault, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment of another person.
According to a police affidavit, Steven Anthony Glass, of Faust Lane, Champion, was asleep in his bedroom at 4 a.m. Nov. 19 when he was awakened by a man shouting. Glass grabbed a loaded .22-caliber rifle he keeps by his bedside, looked down the hallway and saw a man, who he later identified as Jones, pointing a .12-gauge shotgun at him.
Jones fired one shot at Glass, according to the affidavit, then began "messing with" the shotgun after it apparently jammed. Glass then fired several shots at Jones before running down the hallway and tackling him.
Glass pinned Jones against a wall, and both men fell to the floor. It was at that point, according to the affidavit, that Glass recognized Jones. Jones fled, police said, and Glass went to Highlands Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the foot.
Police later found Jones at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. According to the affidavit, Jones appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds to the head, left wrist and left index finger. Jones declined additional comment to police.
Jones is no longer listed as a patient at UPMC.
The criminal affidavit and a warrant for Jones' arrest are filed with Scottdale District Judge J. Bruce King. The case is to be heard by Ligonier District Judge Denise S. Thiel, but that office had no record of the affidavit Thursday.

From the November 7, 2006 Washington Post:
One man was killed and another was critically wounded Sunday during a "gun battle" at a Crofton home, Anne Arundel County police said.
Responding after noon to a report of a shooting at 1709 Leisure Way, police found one man dead. He has not been identified. A resident of the house, Christopher Michael Haramis, 25, had been shot multiple times, police said. He was in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Police said the shooting may have been tied to an earlier confrontation during a party at the house.
About 2 a.m., police said, a man and a woman who had stepped outside the house were confronted by two men looking for cash.
"The persons inside the residence came out and basically interrupted the robbery and subsequently fought with the robbers," said Lt. David Waltemeyer, a police spokesman. "The robbers then ran away, making away with money, and no one was injured."
Those robbers may have been the two men who came to the house midday Sunday, Waltemeyer said. Haramis, who was inside the house with three others, was armed and shot the intruder, who died at the house, police said.
It is unclear who shot Haramis, police said, adding that the other intruder fled.

'He's been through a terrible ordeal'
The first sign of trouble came when workers at a Roselle restaurant heard muffled calls for help from a neighboring coin and comics shop.
Seconds later, a blood-stained Glenn Soustek burst into the restaurant, telling workers he had been shot by an intruder who tried to rob his shop.
Police rushed Friday morning to Soustek's business, Westlake Cards, Comics, Coins, and discovered 40-year-old Geoffrey A. Webb lying dead near the back of the store, a pistol still clenched in his hand.
Webb, who was on federal parole for a 1994 armed robbery, was shot several times by Soustek during what authorities described as a botched holdup.
Soustek, the 49-year-old shop owner, was wounded in the arm during an exchange of gunfire with Webb, whose last known address was in the St. Louis area. Soustek was treated for his injuries and later released.
The fatal shooting -- which was captured on the store's surveillance system -- was justified because Soustek was threatened, DuPage County officials said.
"It was absolutely clear the intruder had pulled a gun and threatened to shoot," DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said. "There clearly was an imminent threat to the shop owner's life."
